This week we celebrated another World Mental Health Day, which spurred us to remind ourselves of both the impact caused by mental illness as well as the preventative measures on the other side of the vital conversation. Everyone is affected by mental health. It encompasses everything from depression and anxiety to chronic fatigue, stress and not being able to process emotions and feelings. Over the past few years, progress has been made in eradicating the stigma associated with mental health, encouraging a constructive and important dialogue about devoting more time and attention to it.
The National Policy for the Promotion of Mental Health in the UAE identifies five main strategic objectives:
- Enhancing the effectiveness of the promotion of awareness
- Developing, strengthening and expanding comprehensive, integrated and responsive services for patients of all ages
- Strengthening multi-sectoral collaboration to implement mental health promotion policy
- Promoting the prevention of mental disorders for people of all ages
- Strengthening capacities and improving information systems
