SleepScore Labs unveils evidence-based Sleep API suite for health and wellness apps

SleepScore Labs has unveiled its evidence-based Sleep API Suite, creating a chance for health and wellness apps to benefit from sleep data.

SleepScore Labs has added the suite as an expansion of its software as a service (SaaS) offerings. In collaboration with the Lake Nona Impact Forum, SleepScore Labs introduced its SleepScore APIs to seamlessly link its sleep data with health and wellness apps.

The APIs are poised to offer evidence-based sleep solutions, enhancing engagement, and driving better outcomes for users. SleepScore collects sleep data from the iPhone, Apple Watch, Garmin, Oura and many others devices – also from its own sonar technology.

Colin Lawlor, CEO of SleepScore, said in an email to VentureBeat that adding SleepScore API’s to an app “means that end users get to insights and personalized coaching on their sleep. Better sleep is a big driver of outcomes in almost every area of health. Whether it is mental health, fitness, weight loss or managing any chronic disease, apps struggled to engage their users and provide evidence-based content.”

Up to 70% of Americans are dissatisfied with their sleep and don’t know how to solve the problem, Lawlor said. This is such a big problem that “sleep” is now the number one search term on Google (twice diet and four times exercise).

“By adding these API’s, apps can provide evidence-based sleep insights, content and coaching to their service – delivering better outcomes. Our SleepScore API’s are unique in that they are built on the same evidence-base now approved for reimbursement in Germany. Our API’s achieve significantly better engagement than most health and wellness apps,” Lawlor said.

The announcement, made in conjunction with the Lake Nona Impact Forum, follows SleepScore Labs’ earlier presentation of key sleep research findings at its 2019 forum.

The company has been featured in the Wellness Home built on Innovation and Technology (WHIT), a living lab aimed at integrating health and wellness technology into everyday life. The SleepScore APIs are positioned as a tool for health and wellness apps to tap into the potential of improving sleep outcomes while boosting user engagement and retention.

SleepScore Labs says sleep is the top health-related word searched for on Google.

Drawing on a wealth of sleep-related data, including 230-plus scientific studies, 61 peer-reviewed publications, and over 360 million hours of contextual sleep data, SleepScore Labs aims to transform the way users approach sleep.

The SleepScore APIs have demonstrated impressive results, including three to four daily engagements, over 60% retention after 30 days (compared to an 8% industry average), and an additional 10 to 26 hours of sleep per month. Moreover, the APIs have shown a significant up to 48% increase in fitness activity and pioneered the world’s first permanently reimbursed sleep improvement program in Germany, accessible to 74 million publicly insured individuals.

Uma Shivanand, head of product at SleepScore Labs, said in a statement, “We are delighted to bring the power of our evidence-based sleep improvement solutions to the many great health and wellness apps that would benefit from improved engagement, retention, and outcomes. It’s our mission to make a meaningful impact in this vital aspect of people’s lives.”

The SleepScore APIs enable partners to deliver hyper-personalized sleep journeys and coaching deeply rooted in the latest behavioral sleep and circadian science. Backed by two independent studies, including a randomized control trial, these APIs leverage user sleep data to drive transformative sleep habits and outcomes.

While the primary goal of many health and wellness companies may not be improving sleep, numerous independent peer-reviewed publications have emphasized the profound impact of sleep on health and wellness outcomes across various sectors, including fitness, nutrition, mental health, women’s health, longevity, skin care, and chronic conditions.

SleepScore Labs, a trusted sleep research and technology partner, has collaborated with global leaders such as Therabody, Mattress Firm, L’Oreal, IFF, Serta, Malouf, Dormeo, Myndstream, Win Brands, Alen, Swanwick, Smart Nora, and Flexsteel, positioning itself as an industry frontrunner and standard-setter.

Each app makes its own pricing and subscription decisions – our aim being to provide flexible business model options for health & wellness apps as they incorporate the power of sleep into their services.

SleepScore’s DTC app offers a freemium model and full personalized services coaching costs $10 per month or $60 per year.

SleepScore Labs was founded in 2016 by a team of sleep experts from places such as ResMed, Apple, Philips and Harvard. SleepScore Labs has 35 people and it has raised $13 million to date. SleepScore APIs pioneered the world’s first permanently reimbursed sleep improvement program – accessible to 74 million publicly insured people in Germany.
