San Luis Obispo, CA- A milestone moment unfolded this week with the inauguration of the brand-new Wellness Center at San Luis Obispo High School. Serving as a beacon of support, the center offers a range of crucial services including individual counseling, group counseling, educational initiatives, outreach programs, and a welcoming haven for students seeking immediate assistance.

Funded through the joint efforts of the San Luis Coastal Unified School District and a generous $30,000 grant from the San Luis Obispo County Friday Night Live Partnership (SLOFNLP), the Wellness Center represents a significant investment in enhancing school-based wellness initiatives.

The center’s unveiling was marked by a week-long celebration, inviting students to embrace this valuable addition to their campus. Festivities commenced with an official ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, followed by engaging tours of the facility accompanied by the melodious tunes of the student Jazz Club. Wednesday saw the Transitions Mental Health Association (TMHA) hosting a stimulating Self-Care Bingo event, while Thursday featured an artistic endeavor led by the wellness center staff. The week culminated in a thoughtful “Take What You Need” activity led by student leaders from SLO High’s Friday Night Live Club, promoting self-care and resilience among peers.

Lana Goodman, a student and president of the SLOHS FNL chapter, expressed her enthusiasm for the Wellness Center, highlighting its pivotal role in bolstering student support on campus. She emphasized the significance of providing a safe space for students to connect, seek support, and navigate challenges, underscoring the critical need for such resources in fostering a healthier school environment.

“I see the Wellness Center as a huge step in the right direction for student support on campus,” said Goodman.  “We are incredibly fortunate and grateful to have this resource to support student wellbeing. This is so important because not only is it a safe space for students to connect with and support each other but also to self-regulate during times of overwhelm. Our students need these opportunities, and I can’t wait to see how the Wellness Center helps facilitate a safer, healthier school environment.”

The establishment of the Wellness Center underscores the enduring collaboration between SLOFNLP and San Luis High School, affirming their shared commitment to youth mental health, well-being, and resilience. Through the integration of the youth development perspective inherent in the Friday Night Live program, students will remain integral in shaping the growth and evolution of the Wellness Center, ensuring its continued relevance and effectiveness in supporting student welfare.
