SIOUX CITY (KTIV) – Sometimes you need to take a deep breath when things get difficult.
Yoga instructors at Family Services with Breathe Yoga are ready to help you through the start of your journey for self-care and mental wellness.
“Exhale, roll your wrist down,” said Lisa Corbett teaching the latest yoga class.
It’s all about mindset, and movement, leaving the hustle and bustle of life at the door.
There are three classes a week, taught by Corbett and Joanne Keane, passionate yoga instructors.
“Every class is a joy and helps people,” said Keane.
In each session, you are taught breathing techniques that can be used outside the class.
“Always start with a meditation that’s part of the mental Wellness we really want that component, teaching people breathing techniques. There’s just so many benefits to learning proper breathing, mindful breathing,” said Corbett.
Mental Health Wellness starts with self-awareness. Understanding your mental health and signs.
This yoga program at Boys and Girls Home Family Services is free to the public with the help of a grant from Delta Dental.
“With their grant, we are able to provide everything we need for this room. We have all brand new equipment, yoga mats, the bolsters, blankets everything You need So whenever anyone wants to come to class, all I have to do is bring themselves,” added Corbett.
It’s been a few years since the launch, with more people coming in to find a sense of peace.
“I have been through that journey, that’s a harsh journey. For a long time, I was struggling. I was struggling and I know what it is. So when I found this meditation and yoga. First of all for your mind, but also and then also for your body to let out all the heavy motion out of your body,” said Keane.
Corbett says taking an hour for self-care can make a world of a difference if you’re used to going 100 miles an hour through life.
“If you’re in a line at the supermarket and you’re feeling anxious or running behind, just go to that breath that we’ve learned here in class. It’s. You have it with you all the time,” said Corbett.
There is also the physical exercise and movement that comes along with the classes. Maybe you have a goal to push yourself this year, Corbett adds that you can learn something new about yourself every time you come to the matt.
“Maybe there’s a little more flexibility, building strength and balance is a really important thing with yoga and that’s something that we lose as we get a little bit older,” she said.
The yoga classes are free, every Tuesday and Thursday at 5:30 p.m., and Saturday at 9 a.m.
The studio is located at 1551 Indian Hills Drive on the upper level of the building.
